The state of Oaxaca is located in the southern part of the Mexican Republic. It shares borders with Puebla and Veracruz to the north, Chiapas to the east, Guerrero to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The land is characterized by its beautiful terrain. The valleys of Oaxaca are located between the Sierra Madre del Sur and the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca. The mountains rise to nearly 3,500 meters above sea level. Oaxaca's scenery is marked by tropical rain forests, great rivers and wide bays along its Pacific coast.
The capital city of Oaxaca offers visitors great architecture, including the Church of Santo Domingo and Macedonio Alcala Theater. There are various markets and shops, which sell all traditional Oaxacan hand-made crafts such as woven rugs and pottery. Entertainment is easy to find; Visitors can enjoy a variety of musical performances or Salsa clubs. Surrounding the capital city are small towns which contain important archaeological sites, elaborately designed churches and are home to many artisans.
Monte Alban and Mitla are two major archaeological sites located outside the city of Oaxaca. These ruins were once home to the Mixtec and Zapotec civilizations. Their culture contributes to the diversity of this state and still strongly influences today's society.
Oaxaca is known for its traditions, natural beauty, and charming people. It is a state rich in culture and history. The people of Oaxaca express their culture though music, dance, traditions and handicrafts.
